Get to Know Dr. Tessler
-
Why did you decide to pursue plastic surgery? My path combined psychology, biochemistry, medicine, and business. Plastic surgery sits at the intersection of creativity and precision. I think of it as the jazz of surgery: rooted in principles refined over two centuries, but with endless room to tailor each result to the individual.
-
Why did you start Defyne?Plastic surgery has drifted into two camps, reconstructive and cosmetic, but the underlying principles are the same. Defyne brings both back together. By aligning surgeons around shared standards and the best tools, we deliver consistent, high-quality care while leaving room for constant innovation.
-
Why is innovation so important to you?Plastic surgery was built on innovation because it solves problems other specialties could not. That spirit still drives the field, and right now is a particularly exciting moment. Advances in surgical technology and our understanding of the body are converging to deliver better, more predictable results with less risk and less downtime.
-
What is your approach to patient care?We build each procedure around the best tools available, then listen closely to what each patient actually wants. For breast surgery alone, we combine techniques that didn't exist a few years ago. A deep toolkit means the consultation is not just about size. It's about how you want to look and feel in every setting.
-
How did you become a pioneer of EVFT?I first learned about EVFT in 2012, during my fellowship at Mass General, when my mentor Dr. Jay Austen published research showing it could dramatically improve fat grafting outcomes. It was clearly going to change the field. When the technology became available, we were among the first practices in North America to use it and one of the top-volume sites in its clinical trial. We helped refine it and co-authored the peer-reviewed study publishing this year.
-
What do you enjoy outside of work?Family first. I play tennis, cycle, cook, and collect wine. Almost all of it is with family, except for the wine, at least until the girls are older. I'm also a big sports fan, especially of my hometown Montréal Canadiens.
